About CritterBlog
CritterBlog and Critterpage.com were begun in September 2007, as offshoots of my web site Art2u.com, which has been online since 1997.
As an artist, I have spent many hours drawing and painting cats and dogs. Two of my cats were strays that were taken in by compassionate people, who then gave them to me. My third cat was a hungry stray that had been living in the field behind my house for several weeks.
One of the dogs I adopted in 2007 had been transferred to the Sacramento SPCA from a high-kill county shelter in the Sierra foothills. She was so sweet and looked so sad. Her tummy was swollen, and it appeared as though she had recently given birth. Although I was anxious to take her home with me right away, I had to leave her for a couple of days at the SPCA clinic, to be spayed.
The other dog I adopted had been surrendered, along with her sister, to a high-kill county shelter in the Sacramento Valley. Both dogs were pregnant. After they were spayed, the sister dog was adopted right away. Northern California Border Collie Rescue stepped in and found a foster home for the shy little dog that seemed so lost without her littermate.
Shelter dogs can have behavior problems and may present serious training challenges. But the rewards of gaining the trust of a skittish animal are too great to measure. Every day I am touched by the sweetness of my dogs and cats, and am frequently brought to laughter by their antics. Animals can make such a difference in our lives.
And you can make a difference in an animal’s life. Have your pets spayed or neutered. Adopt your next pet from a shelter or buy one directly from a reputable breeder. Give generously to the ASPCA or volunteer at your local community shelter.
