Luna the Lonely Cockatoo Cries “Wolf”

September 6, 2008 – 7:10 pm by R. Gilbert

The cries of “Help me! Help me!” were convincing enough that the police kicked in the door of Evelyn DeLeon’s house in Trenton, New Jersey. But what they found was a barking dog and a 10-year old cockatoo named Luna, who spends a little too much time watching television. Left alone in the house while her owners were at a doctor’s appointment, the bird was entertaining herself. When the police found Luna, caged in a first-floor bedroom, she greeted them with “Hello.”

Something similar happened about seven years ago. The police and officials of the Division of Youth and Family Services responded to calls from neighbors, who reported that a baby had been crying in the house for hours. It was just Luna practicing some new sounds she had learned.

The police have arranged for the city public works department to repair the DeLeons’ front door.
