Sleeping Dogs Lie with Susan Estrich

July 30, 2008 – 5:50 am by R. Gilbert

Susan Estrich, 55, a 1974 graduate of Wellesley College, was the first woman president of the Harvard Law Review. In 1988, she was the first woman to manage a national presidential campaign. In that election, George H.W. Bush garnered a decisive victory over her candidate, George Dukakis, by winning in 40 states to the governor’s 10.

Today Ms. Estrich is the Robert Kingsley Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of Southern California, a syndicated writer, and a Fox News commentator. Incidentally, she does a terrific job when she guest-hosts for Alan Colmes on the Fox News political show, Hannity & Colmes.

Ms. Estrich has three dogs: Judy Jarvis Estrich (a Labrador), Molly Emily Estrich (a Cockapoo), and Irving Estrich, an 11-month old Pug puppy named after Ms. Estrich’s late father. The dogs like to cozy up and sleep with the humans in the house at night.

In October 2007, Ms. Estrich wrote a column about what inspired her to adopt Irving. She explains, “The last thing I need, as more than one person has pointed out to me, is a third dog in my life, with my daughter headed for college next year, and my son only three years away from graduating high school, and too many jobs and too much work for the average bear.

“But so what? We have plenty of love to go around, and a nice back yard to boot, and believe me, Irving isn’t going anywhere. Dogs are for keeps, or at least they should be.”
