Take Nigel’s Pledge: Help End Baby Seal Slaughter

March 11, 2008 – 4:48 am by R. Gilbert

Fashion photographer Nigel Barker, a judge on the hit television reality show America’s Next Top Model, is the new spokesperson for the Protect Seals campaign for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). He has issued a challenge to us, to put pressure on the Canadian government to stop the slaughter of baby seals in a gruesome annual harvest of pelts. Here is the challenge in Mr. Barker’s own words:

“The beautiful harp seal nursery I visited with the HSUS’ Protect Seals team in early March will soon be transformed into a scene of bloody carnage. The thought of the impending slaughter with clubs, sharp spikes, and guns in only a few weeks’ time fills me with a terrible sense of dread.

“Like you, I’m determined to bring an end to this pointless slaughter. That’s why I’m issuing a challenge to you to sign the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood. After you’ve signed, please ask your friends to sign it, too.”

The pledge is simple: “I pledge not to buy seafood products produced in Canada—such as snow crabs, cod, scallops, and shrimp—until Canada ends its commercial seal hunt for good.” Use this link to sign now. The countdown to the hunt has begun: the killing begins in 17 days from the date and time of this posting.

Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the HSUS, and has put forth a plan that would economically benefit Canada and the fishermen, while putting an end to this repugnant industry. For further information, see Nigel Barker and The HSUS: Seals are Worth More Alive than Dead (HSUS; March 4, 2008).

In the meantime, take the pledge and encourage your friends to do so too. “I hope to raise awareness in the youth of today with graphic images of both the joy and desperation from the largest mammalian birthing site and consequent killing fields on Earth,” said Mr. Barker. “This sort of behavior cannot and will not be tolerated by the youth of today and I intend to do something about it.”
